You Know, I Was Going To -잖아요
a
Your laptop has broken again. A friend reminds you about the repair shop nearby, but you were about to buy a new one. -잖아요 appeals to information the listener can recognise; -(으)려다가 introduces a plan that changed.
Remind or Correct
Attach -잖아요 to the stem: 알잖아요, 좋잖아요. Nouns take -(이)잖아요. Past forms work too: 말했잖아요. It treats the information as something shared, recoverable, or worth reminding the listener of.
yeok ape surijeomi itjanayo.
There’s a repair shop in front of the station, remember?
oneureun iryoirijanayo.
It’s Sunday today, you know.
An Intention Gets Redirected
Use -려다가 after a vowel or ㄹ and -으려다가 after another consonant: 사려다가, 만들려다가, 먹으려다가. You intended or were about to do the first action, then abandoned or changed it.
sae noteubugeul saryeodaga surihaesseoyo.
I was going to buy a new laptop, but had it repaired instead.
chinguege jeonhwaharyeodaga mesijireul bonaesseoyo.
I was going to call my friend, but sent a message instead.
Hint · 힌트
-다가 interrupts an action already under way. -려다가 can abandon an intention before the action happens. Also watch your tone with -잖아요: a reminder can sound impatient when delivered sharply.
