How Long Since? -(으)ㄴ 지

a

It has been a year since you joined the class. A friend suggests celebrating, and you pass that suggestion to another classmate. One pattern measures time since an event; the other reports “let’s”.

Measure From an Event

Use the completed modifier -(으)ㄴ + 지 + duration + 되다 or 지나다: 만난 지 일 년 됐어요. Leave spaces around 지. The event can start a continuing situation: 한국어를 배운 지 일 년 됐어요 means a year has passed since you began learning.

i sueobeul sijakhan ji il nyeon dwaesseoyo.
It has been a year since I started this class.
jeomsimeul meogeun ji du sigan jinasseoyo.
Two hours have passed since I ate lunch.

Report a Suggestion

Verb stem + -자고 하다 reports a proposal to do something together: 가자고 했어요, 먹자고 했어요. The reported suggestion has no 요 inside it; the ending on 하다 controls how you address the listener.

chinguga gachi jeonyeogeul meokjago haesseoyo.
My friend suggested having dinner together.
daeum jue dasi mannajago haesseoyo.
We said we should meet again next week.
Hint · 힌트
먹자고 했어요 reports “Let’s eat.” 먹는다고 했어요 reports “I eat / I’m eating.” A suggestion and a statement need different quotation endings.
