In Order To, I’d Better -기 위해서
a
You want to take part in a Korean speech contest. Explaining the goal and deciding your next step are different jobs: -기 위해서 supplies the purpose; -아/어야겠다 announces what you now feel you should do.
Explain the Purpose
Attach -기 위해서 to an action verb stem: 배우기 위해서, 참가하기 위해서. With nouns use 을/를 위해서: 건강을 위해서. 위해 without 서 is also common. It expresses a deliberate purpose or benefit.
daehoee chamgahagi wihaeseo maeil yeonseuphaeyo.
I practise every day to take part in the contest.
geongangeul wihaeseo achimmada georeoyo.
I walk every morning for my health.
Arrive at a Resolution
Use the -아/어 form plus 야겠다: 가야겠다, 먹어야겠다, 해야겠다. It often presents a resolution formed from the situation: “I’d better…” or “I should…”. Add 요 when speaking politely.
oneulbuteo bareumeul deo yeonseuphaeyagesseoyo.
I’d better practise pronunciation more from today.
sincheong naljjareul arabwayagesseoyo.
I should check the application date.
Hint · 힌트
해야 돼요 states a requirement. 해야겠어요 often shows you recognising the need and resolving to act. It is useful when a new fact changes your plan.
