Getting Better, Instead -아/어지다

a

The weather is getting cooler, so you change your weekend plans. -아/어지다 describes a change in a quality. 대신에 can replace one action with another or balance a drawback against a benefit.

A Quality Changes

Adjective -아/어 form + 지다 means become that way: 좋아지다, 따뜻해지다, 조용해지다. The change may be gradual or quick. Tense belongs on 지다: 좋아졌어요, 좋아질 거예요.

undongeul hamyeon gibuni joajyeoyo.

A Replacement or a Trade-Off

Use -는 대신에 after an action verb and -(으)ㄴ 대신에 after an adjective. A noun takes 대신에 directly: 커피 대신에 차. With actions it often means instead of; with contrasting qualities it can mean in return for that drawback, there is a benefit.

sane ganeun daesine jibeseo swieosseoyo.
I rested at home instead of going to the mountains.
i bangeun jageun daesine wolsega ssayo.
This room is small, but the rent is cheap.
Hint · 힌트
For a changing adjective use -아/어지다: 조용해졌어요. For coming to do an action use -게 되다: 일하게 됐어요. Both describe change, but attach to different kinds of predicate in these uses.
