Make Sure, Only If -도록 하다

a

A doctor recommends an earlier bedtime. The advice is concrete, and so is the condition behind it: you need enough rest to recover. -도록 하다 gives a direction; -아/어야 sets a necessary condition.

Give Advice or Set an Intention

Verb stem + -도록 하세요 asks someone to make sure they do something. It suits advice, instructions, and organised settings. A speaker can also commit with -도록 할게요: “I’ll make sure to…”.

oneureun iljjik swidorok haseyo.
Make sure you rest early today.
apeuro mureul jaju masidorok halgeyo.
I’ll make sure to drink water often from now on.

A Condition That Must Be Met

Use the -아/어 form plus 야 before the result: 쉬어야 낫다, 일찍 자야 일어날 수 있다. Unlike a general if-clause, this presents the first condition as necessary for the second to be possible.

puk swieoya ppalli naayo.
You need plenty of rest to get better quickly.
yeongsujeungi isseoya hwanbulbadeul su isseoyo.
You need a receipt to be able to get a refund.
Hint · 힌트
낫다 loses ㅅ before a vowel: 나아요, 나아야. It keeps ㅅ before the consonant ending in 낫습니다. A necessary condition also need not be sufficient: having a receipt may be one of several refund requirements.
