Tried It, Need a Refund -려면

a

The shoes looked right in the shop. After trying them at home, you discovered they were too small. -아/어 보니까 gives the result of trying; -(으)려면 asks what you need to do next.

What Trying Revealed

Use the -아/어 form plus 보니까: 입어 보니까, 써 보니까. The next clause gives a fact, impression, or feeling learned through the experience. The discovery is often expressed in the past.

jibeseo sineo bonikka sinbari neomu jagasseoyo.
When I tried them on at home, the shoes were too small.
jikjeop sseo bonikka saenggakboda pyeonhaesseoyo.
When I tried using it myself, it was more convenient than I expected.

If You Intend to Do It

Attach -려면 after a vowel or ㄹ and -으려면 after another consonant: 바꾸려면, 만들려면, 받으려면. It introduces an intended action and the condition, advice, or procedure needed for it.

hwanbulbadeuryeomyeon yeongsujeungi piryohaeyo.
You need a receipt to get a refund.
sinbareul bakkuryeomyeon eodiro gaya haeyo?
Where should I go to exchange the shoes?
Hint · 힌트
Use -려면 for someone’s intended action. A weather condition needs ordinary -(으)면: 비가 오면. Rain has no intention to carry out a plan.
