And, I Intend (으)며

a

A country profile links several facts in a compact written voice. A formal statement of purpose then explains what the writer hopes to achieve. -(으)며 connects the facts; -고자 하다 presents the intention.

Connect Facts in Writing

Use -며 after a vowel or ㄹ and -으며 after another consonant: 크며, 살며, 넓으며. Nouns take -(이)며. It can link parallel facts and also describe simultaneous actions. It is common in written descriptions, reports, and formal speech.

i dosineun badawa gakkaumyeo gyotongi pyeollihaeyo.
This city is close to the sea and has convenient transport.
igoseun yeoksajeogin dosiimyeo gwangwanggaekdo manayo.
This is a historic city and also has many visitors.

State an Intention Formally

Verb stem + -고자 하다 expresses an intention or aim: 소개하고자 합니다, 배우고자 합니다. It is especially useful in presentations, applications, and formal writing. It does not require a vowel/consonant split.

i geureseo urinaraui munhwareul sogaehagoja haeyo.
In this article, I intend to introduce our country’s culture.
hangugui yeoksareul deo gipi baeugoja haeyo.
I intend to study Korean history in greater depth.
Hint · 힌트
The formal control suits these expressions particularly well. The polite and casual versions show the same grammar, but in relaxed conversation -려고 해요 usually fits more easily than -고자 하다.
