As a Person, About a Place (으)로서
a
You are introducing your home town to a group. “As a resident” gives the role you speak from; “about this area” names the subject you will discuss.
Speak From a Role
Attach 로서 after a vowel or ㄹ and 으로서 after another consonant: 교사로서, 학생으로서. It marks a role, status, or capacity. It often appears in thoughtful explanations and formal writing.
simineuroseo uri jiyeoge gwansimi isseoyo.
As a citizen, I take an interest in our area.
gyosaroseo haksaengdeurui uigyeoneul deutgo sipeoyo.
As a teacher, I want to hear the students’ opinions.
Name the Topic of Discussion
Noun + 에 대해서 means about or concerning that topic: 역사에 대해서, 교통에 대해서. 에 대해 is a shorter form. Before another noun use 에 대한: 이 도시에 대한 책, “a book about this city.”
oneureun i dosiui yeoksae daehaeseo iyagihal geoyeyo.
Today I’ll talk about the history of this city.
i jiyeoge daehan jaryoreul chatgo isseoyo.
I’m looking for material about this area.
Hint · 힌트
로서 marks a role. The similar-looking 로써 can mark a means, as in 대화로써 문제를 풀다, “resolve a problem through dialogue.” For everyday means, plain (으)로 is often enough.
