Writing and Reporting Instructions -라고 하다
a
A film review uses a different voice from a conversation. “The story moves quickly” becomes a plain written statement. If the reviewer recommends that you watch it, you need a quotation form for an instruction.
The Plain Written Voice
Present action verbs take -ㄴ다 after a vowel, -는다 after a consonant: 본다, 먹는다. Drop ㄹ before ㄴ: 살다 → 산다. Adjectives keep -다: 좋다. Nouns take -(이)다. Past forms end in -았/었다; a future can use -(으)ㄹ 것이다.
i yeonghwaneun gajok iyagireul darwoyo.
This film deals with a family story.
baeudeurui yeongiga jayeonseureowoyo.
The actors’ performances are natural.
Pass On an Instruction
Use -라고 하다 after a vowel or ㄹ and -으라고 하다 after another consonant: 보라고, 만들라고, 읽으라고. Negative instructions use -지 말라고 하다. A request for something to be done for the requester uses -아/어 달라고 하다.
chinguga i yeonghwareul kkok borago haesseoyo.
My friend told me to make sure I watched this film.
seonsaengnimi neutji mallago hasyeosseoyo.
The teacher told us not to be late.
chinguga chaegeul billyeo dallago haesseoyo.
My friend asked me to lend them a book.
Hint · 힌트
The Casual control in the first two examples shows the plain written form being taught. In an article, -다 is a writing convention rather than a choice about intimacy with a listener. In conversation, the same style can sound blunt.
