Passing On the News -대요

a

A classmate messages you with a change of plans. Short quotation endings let you pass it on without repeating 해요 each time. The ending still tells the listener whether the original message was a statement, question, instruction, or suggestion.

Shorten a Reported Statement

-다고 해요 contracts to -대요: 간다고 해요 → 간대요, 먹는다고 해요 → 먹는대요, 좋다고 해요 → 좋대요. Noun statements use -(이)래요: 학생이래요. Past statements use -았/었대요.

minsuga naeil hanguge ondaeyo.
Minsu says he is coming to Korea tomorrow.
sae sikdang eumsigi masitdaeyo.
They say the food at the new restaurant is good.

Keep the Original Message Type

A reported question can contract to -냬요: 언제 오냬요. An instruction uses -(으)래요: 기다리래요, 읽으래요. A suggestion uses -재요: 만나재요. These are reports of what someone said, rather than direct questions or instructions to your listener.

jisuga myeot sie mannanyaeyo.
Jisu asks what time we are meeting.
seonsaengnimi yeogiseo gidariraeyo. chinguneun bakkeseo mannajaeyo.
The teacher says to wait here. My friend suggests meeting outside.
Hint · 힌트
Distinguish reported -대요 from remembered-observation -데요. 맛있대요 passes on somebody’s claim. 맛있던데요 recalls your own experience. In 학생이래요, 래요 comes from a noun statement; in 기다리래요 it comes from an instruction.
