Leave It Ready, Then -아/어 놓다

a

Friends are coming for dinner. You prepare the ingredients ahead of time, then wait until they arrive to cook. -아/어 놓다 keeps a result ready; -(으)ㄴ 다음에 puts the next action after a completed step.

Leave the Result in Place

Add 놓다 to the -아/어 form: 썰어 놓다, 열어 놓다, 준비해 놓다. The action is completed and its result is maintained, often for later use. In conversation 놓아요 often contracts to 놔요, and 놓았어요 to 놨어요.

chaesoreul miri sseoreo noasseoyo.
I chopped the vegetables in advance and left them ready.
mureul naengjanggoe neoeo noasseoyo.
I put the water in the fridge ready for later.

After the Next Step Is Complete

Use -ㄴ 다음에 after a vowel and -은 다음에 after most consonants. A ㄹ stem drops ㄹ: 산 다음에, 만든 다음에, 씻은 다음에. Like -(으)ㄴ 후에 and -고 나서, it marks sequence after completion.

chingudeuri on daeume gogireul guul geoyeyo.
I’ll grill the meat after my friends arrive.
babeul meogeun daeume gachi seolgeojihaeyo.
We wash the dishes together after eating.
Hint · 힌트
온 다음에 can refer to a future arrival. The completed modifier shows that the arrival must be complete before the cooking; the main verb places the whole plan in the future.
