Layered On -에다가
a
You’re adding salt to a pot of soup: 국에다가 소금을 넣어요. -에다가 can mark the place or surface something is added to, with a stronger sense of putting it there than plain -에. The simpler particle often works too.
gugedaga sogeumeul neoeoyo.
I add salt to the soup.
keopiedaga seoltanghago uyureul neoeoyo.
I add sugar and milk to coffee.
gabangedaga chaegeul neoeoyo.
I put books in the bag.
tisyeocheuedaga cheongbajireul ibeoyo.
I wear jeans with a t-shirt.
Hint · 힌트
With clothing, 에다가 can add one item to an outfit: 청바지에다가 티셔츠를 입어요. A sweater and coat can also be physical layers. The clothing verb and the items tell you whether the relationship is a combination or literal layering.
seuweteoedaga koteureul ibeoyo.
I wear a coat over a sweater.
nalssiga chuwoseo koteuedaga mokdorireul haeyo.
It's cold, so I wear a scarf with a coat.
chobabedaga ganjangeul jjigeoyo.
I dip sushi in soy sauce.
Hint · 힌트
찍다 (to dip) is doing a very different job here than in 사진을 찍어요 (to take a photo) from -(으)ㄴ 후에. Same verb, both describing a quick, precise touch, wildly different context.
