If It Were Possible -다면
a
Imagine you had a year free to live somewhere else. A hypothetical condition lets you explore the idea; a wish says what you would like to happen. Neither requires the plan to be settled.
Imagine the Condition
Present action verbs take -ㄴ다면 after a vowel and -는다면 after most consonants: 간다면, 먹는다면. Drop ㄹ before ㄴ: 살다 → 산다면. Adjectives take -다면, and nouns -(이)라면. Compared with -(으)면, this often makes an imagined premise more explicit; it need not be impossible.
sigani chungbunhadamyeon oegugeseo sara bogo sipeoyo.
If I had enough time, I’d like to try living abroad.
dasi yeohaengeul gandamyeon eodie gago sipeoyo?
If you travelled again, where would you like to go?
Say What You Hope Will Happen
Use -았/었으면 하다 for a hope: 만났으면 해요, 좋았으면 해요. Although the condition contains a past-shaped ending, the wish can concern the present or future. It overlaps with -(으)면 좋겠어요.
eonjenga segye iljureul haesseumyeon haeyo.
I hope to travel around the world someday.
uri gajogi modu geonganghaesseumyeon haeyo.
I hope everyone in my family stays healthy.
Hint · 힌트
For a noun hypothesis use 학생이라면, “if someone is a student,” rather than attaching the action-verb shape -는다면 to the noun. A past hypothesis uses -았/었다면: 시간이 있었다면, “if there had been time.”
