I Hope So -(으)면 좋겠어요
a
You’re planning a picnic and checking the forecast: 내일 날씨가 좋으면 좋겠어요 (“I hope the weather is nice tomorrow”). Use -(으)면 좋겠어요 to say you hope or wish something were the case. The stem ending determines -면 or -으면.
gagyeogi jom deo ssamyeon jokesseoyo.
I hope the price is a little cheaper.
ppalli jeomsimeul meogeumyeon jokesseoyo.
I hope we can have lunch soon.
Hint · 힌트
-(으)면 좋겠다 can express a straightforward hope without implying that the situation is impossible. For example, 빨리 끝나면 좋겠어요 means “I hope it finishes soon.”
i bangi jogeum balgatseumyeon jokesseoyo.
I wish this room were a little brighter.
In Real Life
In real life, -았/었으면 좋겠어요 often sounds like a stronger or more wistful wish about a situation you would like to be different: 조금 더 가까웠으면 좋겠어요, “I wish it were a little closer.” The past-looking form does not mean the wish is about the past.
