“It’s late, it’s raining, so I’ll stay home.” A linking word makes the relationship between thoughts easy to hear. When the story is already clear, Chinese can leave the link unstated. Either way, follow how each sentence adds to, follows from, or changes the one before it.
天色已经晚了，而且外面还在下雨，所以我们决定留在家里。
tiānsè yǐjīng wǎn le, érqiě wàimiàn hái zài xiàyǔ, suǒyǐ wǒmen juédìng liú zài jiālǐ.
It’s already late, and it’s still raining outside, so we’ve decided to stay home.
我先去超市买菜，回来以后再做饭。
wǒ xiān qù chāoshì mǎi cài, huílai yǐhòu zài zuò fàn.
I’ll go to the supermarket to buy groceries first, then cook when I get back.
我把门打开了。外面一个人也没有。
wǒ bǎ mén dǎkāi le. Wàimiàn yí ge rén yě méiyǒu.
I opened the door. There wasn’t anyone outside.
他准备了很久，最后还是决定放弃。
tā zhǔnbèi le hěn jiǔ, zuìhòu háishi juédìng fàngqì.
He prepared for a long time, but in the end decided to give up.
去机场可以坐公交，也可以坐地铁；两种办法都很方便。
qù jīchǎng kěyǐ zuò gōngjiāo, yě kěyǐ zuò dìtiě; liǎng zhǒng bànfǎ dōu hěn fāngbiàn.
You can take a bus or the subway to the airport; both options are convenient.
这次活动有演讲，也有游戏，最后还有抽奖；总的来说，大家都玩得很开心。
zhè cì huódòng yǒu yǎnjiǎng, yě yǒu yóuxì, zuìhòu hái yǒu chōujiǎng; zǒng de lái shuō, dàjiā dōu wán de hěn kāixīn.
The event had talks and games, followed by a prize draw; overall, everyone had a great time.

Listen for the relationship across the whole group: 而且 adds a point, 所以 gives a result, 以后 orders events, 也可以 offers another option, and 总的来说 gathers earlier details into a summary. When a linker is missing, the listener works out the connection from context.
