Planning the Trip as Things Change例 · 要是明早路况顺利

“If the weather clears, we’ll take the ferry; otherwise, we’ll drive.” The opening clause sets the scene; the next gives the decision. A condition, reason, purpose, or concession can all shape what follows, so listen for the relationship between the two thoughts.

要是明早路况顺利，我们就按原计划出发。大家先把行李放进车里，到了山脚再买水。
yàoshi míngzǎo lùkuàng shùnlì, wǒmen jiù àn yuán jìhuà chūfā. Dàjiā xiān bǎ xíngli fàng jìn chē lǐ, dào le shānjiǎo zài mǎi shuǐ.
If the roads are clear tomorrow morning, we’ll leave as planned. Everyone should load their bags first; we can buy water at the foot of the mountain.
由于路上发生了事故，公共汽车晚点了。大家只好等下一班，司机也提醒我们换乘地铁会更快。
yóuyú lùshang fāshēng le shìgù, gōnggòng qìchē wǎndiǎn le. Dàjiā zhǐhǎo děng xià yì bān, sījī yě tíxǐng wǒmen zhuǎnchéng dìtiě huì gèng kuài.
An accident on the road delayed the bus. We had to wait for the next one, and the driver reminded us that transferring to the subway would be faster.
为了赶上末班车，她提前离开了聚会。朋友把外套递给她，她一边道谢一边跑向车站。
wèile gǎnshàng mòbānchē, tā tíqián líkāi le jùhuì. Péngyou bǎ wàitào dì gěi tā, tā yìbiān dàoxiè yìbiān pǎo xiàng chēzhàn.
She left the gathering early to catch the last bus. A friend handed her a coat, and she thanked them while running to the station.
虽然酒店离车站很远，我们还是决定走过去。路上正好经过夜市，大家就停下来吃了点儿东西。
suīrán jiǔdiàn lí chēzhàn hěn yuǎn, wǒmen háishi juédìng zǒu guòqu. Lùshang zhènghǎo jīngguò yèshì, dàjiā jiù tíng xiàlái chī le diǎnr dōngxi.
Although the hotel is far from the station, we decided to walk. We happened to pass a night market, so everyone stopped for a bite.
Hint · 힌트
The opening sentence frames the main point. 要是 sets a condition, 由于 gives a reason, 为了 gives a goal, and 虽然 sets up an expectation that the next clause goes against.
