First This, Then That 首先…然后

Give someone directions to the station: 首先过马路，然后往左走. 首先……然后…… walks the listener through a sequence one step at a time. It’s handy whenever the order matters, from a recipe to a set of directions.

首先，我们要准备好，然后再出发。

shǒuxiān， wǒmen yào zhǔnbèi hǎo， ránhòu zài chūfā。

First, we should get ready, then set out.

我先学习两个多小时，然后再去睡觉。

wǒ xiān xuéxí liǎng gè duō xiǎoshí， ránhòu zài qù shuìjiào。

I’ll study for a little over two hours, then go to bed.
