First One Thing, Then Another例 · 下课以后

You finish class, go to the bank, then pick up groceries on the way home. Chinese can line up the actions in the order they happen: finish, go, pick up. The same subject often carries through the whole sequence.

下课以后,我去银行取钱。
xiàkè yǐhòu, wǒ qù yínháng qǔ qián.
After class, I’m going to the bank to withdraw money.
我去超市买菜,晚上在家做饭。
wǒ qù chāoshì mǎi cài, wǎnshang zài jiā zuò fàn.
I’m going to the supermarket to buy vegetables, then cook dinner at home.
他吃完早饭就开车去上班。
tā chī wán zǎofàn jiù kāichē qù shàngbān.
After breakfast, he drives to work.
我们先去取票,再进电影院。
wǒmen xiān qù qǔ piào, zài jìn diànyǐngyuàn.
We’ll pick up the tickets first, then go into the cinema.
Hint · 힌트
These verbs share one subject and happen in sequence. If you want to make the order extra clear, add 先……再…… (“first…then…”).
