What’s in the Room? 有 / 着

You walk into a room and tell your friend what’s there. Start with the place, then say what exists or what you can see. 有 introduces something present; 着 describes an arrangement that’s already in place.

桌子上有一本书。
zhuōzi shàng yǒu yì běn shū.
There’s a book on the table.
门口站着两个人。
ménkǒu zhàn zhe liǎng ge rén.
Two people are standing at the doorway.
墙上挂着一张照片。
qiáng shàng guà zhe yì zhāng zhàopiàn.
There’s a photo hanging on the wall.
楼下有一家咖啡店。
lóuxià yǒu yì jiā kāfēidiàn.
There’s a café downstairs.
Hint · 힌트
Use 有 to introduce what exists in a place. With 着, the verb often shows the visible position or state—站着, 挂着, 开着—rather than a new event happening right now.
