More Than You Might Think 有

Someone asks how tall your cousin is, and you answer with a number. Chinese can use 有 before the amount to show that something reaches a particular size or value. In comparisons, 有…那么… means “as … as that.”

我弟弟有一米八高。
wǒ dìdi yǒu yì mǐ bā gāo.
My younger brother is 1.8 metres tall.

这家店有那家店那么贵吗?
zhè jiā diàn yǒu nà jiā diàn nàme guì ma?
Is this shop as expensive as that one?
他的中文没有你那么好。
tā de Zhōngwén méiyǒu nǐ nàme hǎo.
His Chinese isn’t as good as yours.
Hint · 힌트
The comparison 有…那么… sets a standard (“as tall as him”). Negative 没有…那么… means “not as…as.” For a taller/shorter comparison, 比 works differently: 他比我高 (“He’s taller than me”).
