What Day Works for You?
You’re arranging to meet a friend and need to check the day. Chinese often answers with the weekday right after the subject, without 是. Add 星期几 to ask which day, then use the same pattern to give the answer.
jīntiān xīngqī jǐ?
What day is it today?
jīntiān xīngqī'èr.
Today is Tuesday.
wǒmen xīngqīwǔ jiànmiàn ba.
Let’s meet on Friday.
xīngqītiān wǒ bú shàngbān.
I don’t work on Sundays.
Hint · 힌트
In 今天星期二, 星期二 is the predicate: it tells you what day today is. When a weekday comes before the subject, as in 星期天我不上班, it sets the time for the whole sentence.
