It’s Tuesday, Three O’Clock
Someone asks the time, then asks how much the notebook costs. In Chinese, short facts like these can finish with a noun or number phrase—no 是 needed. It’s a useful pattern for days, times, ages, and prices.
jīntiān xīngqī'èr.
Today is Tuesday.
xiànzài sān diǎn bàn.
It’s half past three.
zhè běn bǐjìběn èrshí kuài qián.
This notebook costs twenty yuan.
wǒ mèimei jīnnián shíbā suì.
My younger sister is eighteen this year.
Hint · 힌트
For many simple facts, Chinese puts the information directly after the subject: 今天星期二, “Today [is] Tuesday.” Use 是 when you identify or classify someone or something: 她是老师 (“She’s a teacher”).
