The More, Although -(으)ㄹ수록
a
The more you use a language, the more familiar it becomes. A report about that change may also need to contrast two trends. -(으)ㄹ수록 links related changes; -(으)나 sets one fact against another in a written voice.
One Change Goes With Another
Use -ㄹ수록 after a vowel or ㄹ and -을수록 after another consonant: 갈수록, 알수록, 읽을수록. The second clause changes in relation to the first. You can reinforce it with -(으)면: 읽으면 읽을수록.
hangugeoneun sseulsurok iksukhaejyeoyo.
The more you use Korean, the more familiar it becomes.
i chaegeun ilgeumyeon ilgeulsurok jaemiisseoyo.
This book gets more interesting the more I read it.
A Contrast in Written Language
Use -나 after a vowel and -으나 after most consonants: 크나, 작으나. A ㄹ stem drops ㄹ before ㄴ: 살다 → 사나. Nouns take -(이)나. This connector often does the work of -지만 in reports or formal writing.
ollain sueobeun pyeollihana jikjeop daehwahal gihoega jeogeoyo.
Online classes are convenient, but there are fewer opportunities to talk in person.
yeoreo beon sidohaesseuna seonggonghaji mothaesseoyo.
I tried several times but did not succeed.
Hint · 힌트
The connector -(으)나 gives a contrast, as in 편리하나, “although convenient.” Noun + (이)나 can also list alternatives, while quantity + (이)나 can emphasise a large amount. The form’s job depends on what it attaches to and the sentence around it.
