Oh, Please Don’t -네요
a
You arrive at a quiet performance space and realise how many people are already seated. You can react to what you notice with -네요, then ask someone to stop an action with -지 마세요.
React to What You Notice
Add -네요 to a verb or adjective stem: 많네요, 시작하네요. Drop ㄹ before ㄴ: 멀다 → 머네요. With a noun use -(이)네요: 학생이네요, 의사네요. It presents the information as something you are noticing now.
sarami jeongmal manneyo.
There are so many people!
gongyeoni beolsseo sijakhaenneyo.
The performance has already started!
Ask Someone Not to Do It
Verb stem + -지 말다 gives a negative instruction. The usual polite request is -지 마세요; a casual request is -지 마. The instruction concerns an action someone can control, such as talking or taking photos.
gongyeon jungeneun sajineul jjikji maseyo.
Please don’t take photos during the performance.
yeogieseo keun soriro iyagihaji maseyo.
Please don’t speak loudly here.
Hint · 힌트
말다 is the negative instruction verb. 먹지 마세요 means “please don’t eat”; 먹지 않아요 simply says someone does not eat. A polite ending can still carry a firm instruction.
