Made for Beginners, Perfect for the Commute 向き・向け

向き and 向け both connect something to a user or purpose, but the direction differs. Noun + 向き means “suited to” or “a good fit for” that person or use. Noun + 向け means “aimed at” or “intended for” a target audience. A product can be向け a certain group without being especially向き for every member of that group.

向き describes suitability or fit. It often appears as 向いている and can be used for people, tools, activities, or environments.

向け identifies the intended audience or market. It can modify a noun directly (初心者向けの本) or appear with に to describe the intended design. Unlike 向き, it does not necessarily claim the product is a perfect fit for that group.

に合わせて means “in accordance with / to match,” describing an adjustment made to fit a person, schedule, or condition: 相手に合わせて話し方を変える, “change how you speak to suit the other person.”

In Real Life
A beginner’s workbook is 初心者向け because it was designed for that audience. A clear, step-by-step explanation may also be 初心者向き because it is suitable for beginners. The two often overlap, but 向け focuses on intent and 向き on fit.
Hint · 힌트
Intended audience: X向け. Suitable fit: X向き / Xに向いている. Use 向け for marketing, courses, and products; use 向き for suitability or aptitude.
