Since We Went to the Trouble せっかく
せっかく draws attention to the effort it took to get something, or to a valuable chance that has come up. It often leads to a suggestion to make use of that effort or opportunity, or expresses regret when it is wasted.
Since we came all the way to Kyoto, let's go see a temple.
せっかく can describe a special chance or the trouble already taken. せっかくなら often means “since we’re doing this / if we have the chance,” and introduces a suggestion to make the most of it.
After all that preparation, the game was canceled because of rain.
With のに, せっかく points to effort or a good opportunity that did not lead to the hoped-for result. The speaker often feels disappointed that it went to waste.
In Real Life
Use せっかくなら when making a practical suggestion during a trip or outing: せっかくなら地元の料理を食べよう, “Since we’re here, let’s try the local food.” Use せっかく〜のに to show sympathy when someone’s effort was wasted.
Hint · 힌트
Think “this took effort” or “this chance is special.” The next clause usually recommends using the opportunity or laments that it wasn’t used.
