Why Is It Popular? Here’s Why かというと・という理由で
These expressions both deal with reasons, but do different jobs. Put a question word + かというと before an explanation to answer an implied “why?” Use a statement + という理由で to identify the reason being given for a decision or result.
なぜかというと and どうしてかというと commonly lead into an explanation, often ending in からです or ためです. The phrase signals that the speaker is about to make the reason explicit.
という理由で packages a preceding fact as the reason for an outcome. It is useful when explaining or reporting the grounds for a decision; it can sound as though the reason is being cited rather than independently endorsed. For a plain causal explanation without that framing, use から or ので, covered in the earlier lessons.
どちらかというと uses the same “if you ask me to choose” shape to give a soft preference: “if anything, I’d say…” It usually introduces a tendency rather than a strong either-or decision.
