Isn’t It So? -지 않아요?
a
You both watch a programme, but your friend seems less enthusiastic. A negative question invites agreement. If you want to insist how good something is, 얼마나 with an emphatic -다고요 adds force to your evaluation.
Invite the Listener’s Agreement
Verb or adjective stem + -지 않아요? can ask whether the listener shares a view: 재미있지 않아요? With a noun use -(이)지 않아요? Context and intonation decide whether it seeks agreement or is a literal negative question.
i peurogeuraemeun jeongmal jaemiitji anayo?
Isn’t this programme really interesting?
du saramui moksoriga biseuthaji anayo?
Don’t their voices sound similar?
Insist on the Degree
얼마나 plus a statement-shaped -다고요 can emphasise how much or how strongly something is true. Present action verbs use -ㄴ다고요/-는다고요; adjectives use -다고요. The speaker is stressing their own claim here, rather than necessarily reporting someone else’s words.
i gasuga noraereul eolmana jalhandagoyo!
You have no idea how well this singer sings!
majimak jangmyeoni eolmana gamdongjeogieotdagoyo!
The final scene was so moving!
Hint · 힌트
A plain 얼마나 재미있어요? can ask how interesting it is. The emphatic ending and intonation turn 얼마나 재미있다고요! into an insistence on the degree. Use this expressive style where enthusiasm or correction fits the conversation.
