If Only I Had -았어야 했는데

a

A trip went badly because you left too little time. You can say what you should have done, then imagine the better result that would probably have followed. Both expressions look back at a missed possibility.

A Requirement You Failed to Meet

Use -았/었어야 했는데 to reflect on something that should have been done: 확인했어야 했는데, 일찍 왔어야 했는데. The unfinished -는데 often leaves the unfortunate consequence understood, though it can also be stated.

gicha siganeul miri hwaginhaesseoya haenneunde nochyeosseoyo.
I should have checked the train time beforehand, but I missed it.
chingu mareul deo jal deureosseoya haenneundeyo.
I should have listened more carefully to my friend.

Imagine the Result That Did Not Happen

A counterfactual condition can lead into -았/었을 텐데: 일찍 나왔으면 도착했을 텐데. It presents a likely or expected past result under that different condition. The same ending can also express an assumption about a real past situation, so the condition and context matter.

jogeumman iljjik nawasseumyeon gichareul tasseul tendeyo.
If I’d left just a little earlier, I would probably have caught the train.
jidoreul bwasseumyeon gireul chajasseul tendeyo.
If I’d looked at the map, I would probably have found the way.
Hint · 힌트
-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬어요 also expresses regret. -았/었어야 했는데 puts more emphasis on what was needed; -았/었을 텐데 imagines or assumes the result.
