Compared With, I Should 에 비해서

a

Compared with a few years ago, meeting online is easy. Yet staying in touch still takes effort. 에 비해서 sets a comparison baseline; -아/어야지 can insist that a condition needs to be met.

Choose the Comparison Baseline

Attach 에 비해서 to a noun: 예전에 비해서, 작년에 비해서. It means compared with that baseline. 에 비해 is a shorter form. The rest of the sentence supplies the quality being compared.

yejeone bihaeseo yeollakhagiga hwolssin swiwojyeosseoyo.
Keeping in touch has become much easier than before.
i hyudaeponeun gagyeoge bihaeseo seongneungi joayo.
This phone performs well for its price.

Remind Someone or Resolve to Act

Use the -아/어 form plus 야지 to say what someone should do, or to express your own resolution: 약속을 지켜야지요, 나도 운동해야지. In a directive, tone can make it a friendly reminder or a scolding. -아/어야지 can also connect a necessary condition to the result that follows.

yaksogeul haesseumyeon jikyeoyajiyo.
If you made a promise, you should keep it.
ibeoneneun jega meonjeo yeollakhaeyajiyo.
This time I should be the one to get in touch first.
Hint · 힌트
친구와 이야기해야지 can be a self-directed “I should talk to my friend.” 다른 사람의 말도 들어야지 can remind someone “You should listen to other people too.” Identify who is expected to act before interpreting the tone.
