A Thousand, a Letter, One More Time 千/遍
You’re mailing a letter, buying a coat, and asking a teacher to repeat an instruction. Chinese uses different counting words for each job: units such as 千 and 万 build large numbers; noun measure words count things; and action measure words count how many times something happens.
这台电脑要两千块，贵一点的要两万块。
zhè tái diànnǎo yào liǎng qiān kuài, guì yìdiǎn de yào liǎng wàn kuài.
This computer costs two thousand yuan; the more expensive one costs twenty thousand.
我给老师写了一封信，还买了一件外套。
wǒ gěi lǎoshī xiě le yì fēng xìn, hái mǎi le yí jiàn wàitào.
I wrote the teacher a letter and bought a coat as well.
这篇文章我已经读了两遍，老师又讲了一遍。
zhè piān wénzhāng wǒ yǐjīng dú le liǎng biàn, lǎoshī yòu jiǎng le yí biàn.
I’ve read this article twice, and the teacher explained it once more.
昨晚我们看了一场电影，回家前还等了他一下。
zuówǎn wǒmen kàn le yì chǎng diànyǐng, huíjiā qián hái děng le tā yíxià.
We saw a movie last night and waited for him a little before going home.
