Going with a Friend 跟

You and a friend head to school together: 我跟朋友去学校. Here 跟 brings your companion along. In 茶和咖啡, 和 simply joins two items. The word after the connector helps you see whether it’s linking a person to an action or one item to another.

Examples

我跟朋友去学校。

Wǒ gēn péngyou qù xuéxiào.

I’m going to school with a friend.

我喜欢茶和咖啡。

Wǒ xǐhuan chá hé kāfēi.

I like tea and coffee.

老师跟学生一起看电影。

Lǎoshī gēn xuéshēng yìqǐ kàn diànyǐng.

The teacher watches a film together with the students.
