Tea or Coffee? 还是
At lunch, someone asks what you want: 你喝茶还是咖啡? Here 还是 puts two choices on the table. 和 does a different job: it joins things you want together, as in 茶和咖啡. Hear the question mark and the meaning becomes easy to spot.
Examples
你喝茶还是咖啡?
Nǐ hē chá háishi kāfēi?
Would you like tea or coffee?
我和姐姐在家。
Wǒ hé jiějie zài jiā.
My older sister and I are at home.
你坐车还是走路?
Nǐ zuò chē háishi zǒulù?
Will you go by car or walk?
Hint · 힌트
还是 is the usual choice in a question asking someone to select. It is different from 和, which joins items rather than offering a choice.
