If You Don’t Know, Ask the Teacher ばいい・べき・ことだ
Your friend is stuck: the form is confusing, the deadline is close, and they ask what to do. ばいい offers a workable next step; べき and ことだ can make the advice firmer.
The N5 lesson on ほうがいい gives a common, personal recommendation (“you’d better…”). These N3 forms let you choose a different angle: ばいい points to a workable solution, べき frames an action as an obligation or standard, and ことだ gives direct advice about what to do.
ばいい attaches to the conditional form and suggests what would solve the problem: “if you do X, that would be good.” It often feels lighter and more practical than べき, especially in a direct reply to someone asking what to do.
べき follows a verb’s dictionary form and presents an action as something one ought to do, based on a rule, responsibility, or strong principle. Its negative is べきではない: the action is something one ought not to do. べき can sound forceful when directed at another person, so it is often safer for general principles than casual advice.
ことだ follows a dictionary or negative verb and gives straightforward advice about the action to take: “the thing to do is…” It can sound authoritative, as if the speaker is laying out a course of action rather than offering a casual suggestion.
たらいい and といい are softer ways to offer advice or express a hope. たらいい often points to a practical next step: 受付で聞いたらいいですよ, “you could ask at reception.” といい is common for wishes about a future outcome: 早く元気になるといいですね, “I hope you feel better soon.” They sound less like a rule than べき.
に越したことはない says that something is best or safest, while recognizing that it may not be essential: 早めに予約するに越したことはありません, “it’s best to book early.” It is less forceful than べき and often presents a prudent recommendation.
