Leaving the Details Aside for a Moment はともかく・は別として・ならともかく
These expressions set one topic or condition aside to make a different point. はともかく and は別として bracket off a topic; ならともかく says “if it were X, that would be one thing,” implying the actual case is different.
Putting the details aside, the overall plan is well made.
はともかく means “putting X aside for now.” It often shifts attention away from a secondary issue and toward the main evaluation.
Setting cost aside, preparation takes time.
は別として also separates a point from the discussion. It sounds matter-of-fact and works well in careful speech or writing; it doesn’t necessarily imply that the point is unimportant.
If it were a child, that would be one thing, but it's a problem when an adult forgets a promise.
ならともかく presents a hypothetical exception, then contrasts it with the real case. The speaker suggests that the first situation might be understandable, but the second is not.
In Real Life
In a review, 細かい点はともかく can keep the conversation focused on the overall result. In a policy discussion, は別として cleanly separates a side issue. Use ならともかく when you want to say one case might be acceptable but another isn’t.
Hint · 힌트
はともかく = set aside for now; は別として = consider separately; ならともかく = if it were X, that would be one thing. The last one sets up a clearer contrast with the actual situation.
