That’s How It Was When I Was a Kid ものだ・たものだ
ものだ has two useful functions here. Plain form + ものだ can express a general truth, expected behavior, or an observation about how life works. Past form + ものだ looks back nostalgically on something the speaker used to do often. The present or past form changes whether the comment is general or tied to repeated personal experience.
People learn from mistakes.
Plain form + ものだ presents a broad observation or something the speaker considers natural. Depending on context, it can also give gentle advice about what one should do.
When I was a child, I used to swim in the river every day in summer.
Past form + ものだ recalls a repeated or familiar past habit, often with nostalgia. It does not usually describe a single completed event; use the plain past alone for that.
In Real Life
A speaker may say 時間は大切にするものだ as a general reminder, “one should value time.” 思えば、よく一緒に遊んだものだ looks back fondly on a repeated past activity.
Hint · 힌트
General truth or expected behavior: Vるものだ. Repeated past habit recalled with feeling: Vたものだ. The past marker is what shifts the sentence from general comment to looking back.
