So, What Does Studying Abroad Mean? というのは・つまり・というより

These expressions explain or refine meaning. というのは introduces a definition or reason for a preceding term or statement. ということだ can report what someone said or draw a conclusion (“that means…”). つまり, 要するに, and 即ち restate the point more simply; 即ち is more formal. したがって introduces a logical consequence (“therefore”), especially in formal explanation; そうすると and そこで can connect an action or cause to what followed. その結果 introduces an outcome. とおり means “as / in accordance with” a stated model or instruction. というのは事実だ emphasizes that a statement is factual. 前者 and 後者 refer back to the first and second items in a comparison. というより corrects or refines a label: “rather than X, it’s more like Y.” The existing N4 lesson on という covers the basic quotation and naming pattern; this lesson focuses on discourse use.

というのは can introduce what a word or prior statement means. It is often followed by ことだ or a plain explanation. ということだ can also pass along information: 先生は来ないということだ, “I hear the teacher isn’t coming.” Context distinguishes reported speech from a conclusion.

つまり explicitly summarizes an inference or restates an explanation in a clearer form. というより revises a description: 親切というより、おせっかいだ, “rather than kind, they’re meddlesome.”

というより does not simply negate the first term. It signals that the second description is more accurate or revealing.

In Real Life
In conversation, つまり can check shared understanding: “So, if I understand correctly…” というより can gently adjust a word choice without insisting the first description was completely wrong.
Hint · 힌트
Define or explain a term: というのは. Report or conclude: ということだ. Summarize: つまり. Replace an imprecise label with a better one: というより.
