It’s So Much, I Can’t Even Put It Into Words

Mark strict limits, narrow exceptions, and emphatic reactions in formal and literary Japanese. These forms define a boundary or emphasize how far a statement reaches. Check whether the pattern excludes alternatives, sets a narrow range, or highlights an unexpected case.

Patterns in this lesson

So much that, Extremely, Very
To depend on
Never cease to, Always, Sincerely, Greatly, From the bottom of one’s heart
Would rather…than, Rather than, Better off
I said…!, I told you…!, !
Even if not, Without, Don’t have to
Since…(it is no wonder that), Because…(it is no wonder that), Due to…(it is no wonder that)
Not at all, By no means, Definitely not, Nothing like that, Not really
When it came to, Only when, Only after, Go as far as
Not even, Not at all, Never could have
On the occasion of, While … as well, While … (one is) at it, During, Along the way
Regardless of (whatever … is), Irrespective of (whatever … is)
Cannot… even if one wants or tries, Would like but cannot, Wants or tries but cannot

に限って narrows the eligible group. A nearby exception may further restrict the scope, so track both the boundary and any qualification.

In notices and rules, treat boundary expressions as practical instructions: identify who, what, and when they include.

In Real Life
Rules often use に限って or related limit expressions to define eligibility, dates, or exceptions. Read these closely before acting on an application or announcement.
Hint · 힌트
Check the boundary: who or what is included, and whether the sentence adds an exception. Do not translate every limit as a broad “only.”
