If Only ば・ばよかった
A recipe says: “If the sauce is too thick, add a little water.” ば sets up that kind of condition, where the result follows as a reasonable next step.
If you drink lots of water, you'll get better quickly.
If you sleep well, you'll get better quickly.
Hint · 힌트
飲む becomes 飲めば, 寝る becomes 寝れば, swapping the final syllable for its え-row equivalent before adding ば. Unlike と, which describes an automatic mechanism, and たら, which leans toward one-time or hypothetical events, ば sounds the most like a general rule or piece of advice, closer to textbook logic than to a specific situation.
If the weather's good, I want to go.
If the rent is cheap, I'll rent it.
Hint · 힌트
い-adjectives drop the final い and add ければ, 安い becomes 安ければ. な-adjectives and nouns use なら instead of ば, 便利なら, which you already met as its own pattern, if that’s the case.
If you make flashcards, I think you'll be able to remember the kanji.
Hint · 힌트
ば pairs naturally with advice or a recommendation, especially followed by と思います, spelling out a strategy and its expected payoff, a common structure when someone asks how to accomplish something.
