A More Formal Way to Say ‘Also’ 亦

When a report or essay has made one point, 亦 lets you add another: “also,” “likewise,” or “and … too.” It usually sits before the predicate, much like 也, but sounds more formal and is far more common in writing.

Adding a Second Point

他的成就令人敬佩，他的精神亦值得我们学习。

Tā de chéngjiù lìng rén jìngpèi, tā de jīngshén yì zhídé wǒmen xuéxí.

His achievements are admirable, and his spirit is also worth learning from.

The first clause introduces his achievements; 亦 adds a related quality. The word belongs before the new predicate, not at the end of the sentence.

这项政策影响深远，亦为未来发展奠定了基础。

Zhè xiàng zhèngcè yǐngxiǎng shēnyuǎn, yì wèi wèilái fāzhǎn diàndìng le jīchǔ.

This policy has a far-reaching effect and also lays a foundation for future development.

亦 can add a consequence or a supporting point in formal prose. For a conversation with a friend, 也 is the natural everyday choice.

这种做法方便，亦能减少浪费。

Zhè zhǒng zuòfǎ fāngbiàn, yì néng jiǎnshǎo làngfèi.

This approach is convenient and can also reduce waste.

Hint · 힌트

亦 adds information; it does not mean “but” or “therefore.” Use a different connector when the next clause contrasts with or follows as a result of the first.

In Real Life

In news reports and formal writing, 亦 can give two claims a balanced, parallel feel. In ordinary speech, speakers generally use 也 for the same job.
