Just When You Didn’t Need It 偏偏
You finally get a day off, and 偏偏下起雨来了 (“it just had to rain”). 难怪 links a result to its explanation; 索性 shows the decision you make next—stay home and enjoy the day anyway. One explains, one marks the unlucky turn, and one moves the story along.
Understand Why It Happened
难怪 means “no wonder.” Use it when a new detail explains a result that seemed puzzling a moment ago.
难怪他这么累。
Nánguài tā zhème lèi.
No wonder he is so tired.
Hint · 힌트
难怪 and 怪不得 both introduce an explanation. This lesson uses 难怪; see No Wonder for 怪不得.
Mark the Unwelcome Coincidence
偏偏 highlights that something happened at exactly the wrong time or against someone’s hopes. It often appears before the event that causes the frustration.
我想去的时候,偏偏下雨了。
wǒ xiǎng qù de shíhou, piānpiān xiàyǔ le.
Just when I wanted to go, it rained (contrary to my wish).
Hint · 힌트
偏偏 reflects the speaker’s perspective: the event clashes with what they wanted or expected.
Make a Decisive Choice
索性 introduces a clear decision after considering the situation: “might as well” or “just go ahead and…”.
雨下得太大,索性不去了。
yǔ xià de tài dà, suǒxìng bú qù le.
The rain is too heavy, might as well not go.
Hint · 힌트
索性 usually comes before the chosen action. It suggests settling on that option instead of hesitating.
In Real Life
A useful sequence is: explain the situation with 难怪, name the frustrating coincidence with 偏偏, then use 索性 for the decision that follows.
