When Things Go the Other Way 反倒
You spent all afternoon cleaning, and the room is messy again: 白白忙了一场 (“all that work for nothing”). The result went the other way than expected: 反倒. And if the facts are plain, 分明 puts that certainty into the sentence. These adverbs carry the speaker’s reaction to what happened.
Show That an Effort Was Wasted
白白 comes before an action or result that brought no benefit. It often appears with 等、浪费 or 失去.
我们白白等了两个小时,最后还是没见到他。
wǒmen báibái děng le liǎng ge xiǎoshí, zuìhòu háishi méi jiàndào tā.
We waited two hours for nothing and still did not see him.
Hint · 힌트
白白 describes a wasted effort or loss; here it does not mean “white.”
Point Out the Unexpected Opposite
反倒 introduces a result that runs against what the listener might expect from the first clause. It often means “instead” or “on the contrary.”
我帮了他,他反倒怪我。
wǒ bāngle tā, tā fǎndào guài wǒ.
I helped him, but he blamed me instead.
Hint · 힌트
反倒 marks a surprising turn, not just any next action.
Emphasize What Is Plain to See
分明 means “clearly” or “obviously.” It can modify something the speaker clearly perceived or stress that a fact is unmistakable.
我分明听见有人叫我。
wǒ fēnmíng tīngjiàn yǒu rén jiào wǒ.
I clearly heard someone call me.
Hint · 힌트
分明 often carries insistence: the evidence is clear, even if someone else denies it.
In Real Life
白白 points to effort with no payoff; 反倒 marks a result that goes against expectation; 分明 tells the listener the evidence seems unmistakable to the speaker.
