What Happened to It? 被

The door swings open in the wind: 门被风给吹开了. In a 被 sentence, name the affected thing first, then say what happened. 给 can appear after the doer for emphasis in a spoken line; the affected person or thing remains the sentence’s focus.

门被风给吹开了。
mén bèi fēng gěi chuī kāi le.
The wind blew the door open.
我的自行车被人给偷走了。
wǒ de zìxíngchē bèi rén gěi tōu zǒu le.
Someone stole my bicycle.
材料已经被老师检查过了。
cáiliào yǐjīng bèi lǎoshī jiǎnchá guo le.
The materials have already been checked by the teacher.
Hint · 힌트
The subject before 被 is the affected participant, not the person doing the action. If the doer is included, it follows 被; 给 may appear after that doer in an emphatic spoken version.
In Real Life
In conversation, 被 often appears when something goes wrong or when the result matters more than who caused it.
