Keep Talking, Keep Going

The rain starts, then keeps going through the night. 起来 can mark a beginning; 下去 can carry an action on. Add 得 or 不 before a result complement to say whether you can reach it: 看得懂 means you can understand, while 看不出来 says you can’t make it out.

When they heard the familiar song, the children all started laughing.
yǎnchū jiéshù hòu, guānzhòng hái xiǎng tīng xiàqù, kěshì chǎngdìfāng yǐjīng yào guānmén le.
After the show ended, the audience still wanted to listen, but the venue had to close.
zhè zhāng dìtú tài jiù le, wǒ kàn bu chūlái wǒmen xiànzài zài nǎr.
This map is too old; I can’t make out where we are now.
wǒ kàn de dǒng zhè fèn shuōmíng, nǐ búyòng zài jiěshì yí biàn.
I can understand these instructions; you don’t need to explain them again.
Hint · 힌트
起来 can mark an action beginning, while 下去 can show it continuing. In 看不出来, the negative potential form says the result cannot be reached. Compare 看得懂 for an action that is possible.
