If That Happens 否则
“Take an umbrella in case it rains; otherwise, you’ll be soaked.” 假如 opens a possible situation. 万一 does too, often with a hint of concern; 否则 names what may happen if no action is taken.
立刻起床，否则你上学会迟到。
lìkè qǐchuáng， fǒuzé nǐ shàngxué huì chídào。
Get up at once, or you’ll be late for school.
假如你认真听，就能听懂。
jiǎrú nǐ rènzhēn tīng， jiù néng tīng dǒng。
If you listen carefully, you’ll understand.
万一来不了，我会先给你打电话。
wànyī lái bùle， wǒ huì xiān gěi nǐ dǎdiànhuà。
In case I can't come, I'll give you a call beforehand.
“我明天再做。” “这话你昨天就说过了！”
