Pass the Exam, Notice the Clue例 · 她准备了半年

You study hard and 考上 the program; later, you 看出 a familiar face in the crowd. Some directional-looking complements describe a result rather than movement through space. The action reaches somewhere useful: passing, noticing, remembering, or getting something down in writing.

她准备了半年,终于考上了理想的大学。
tā zhǔnbèi le bàn nián, zhōngyú kǎoshàng le lǐxiǎng de dàxué.
She prepared for half a year and finally got into her ideal university.
从他的表情,我看出他有点儿紧张。
cóng tā de biǎoqíng, wǒ kànchū tā yǒudiǎnr jǐnzhāng.
From his expression, I could tell he was a little nervous.
我突然想起钥匙还放在办公室里。
wǒ tūrán xiǎngqǐ yàoshi hái fàng zài bàngōngshì lǐ.
I suddenly remembered that I’d left the keys in the office.

Hint · 힌트
These complements describe a result, not just a direction: 考上 is a successful outcome, 看出 is a conclusion you reach, 想起 is a memory returning, and 写下 is information recorded.
