From Then On 自
On a formal notice, you might read 自去年起, “starting last year.” 自 sets a point of departure in time or place, and the phrase after it tells the reader where the statement begins. It’s more at home in writing than in casual conversation.
他独自来了。
tā dúzì lái le.
He came alone.
自那时以来。
zì nàshí yǐlái.
Since that time.
他很自信。
tā hěn zìxìn.
He's very confident.
