Whoever Comes, There’s a Seat 谁…都

You’ve saved seats for your friends, but they can arrive whenever they like. A question word such as 谁 or 什么 can pair with 都 to mean “whoever” or “whatever.” Use 各, 每, and 任何 to talk about each member, every kind, or any person.

谁先到,谁就先进去;我们给每个人都留了座位。
shéi xiān dào, shéi jiù xiān jìnqù; wǒmen gěi měi ge rén dōu liú le zuòwèi.
Whoever arrives first can go in first; we saved a seat for everyone.
你想吃什么,我们都可以做。
nǐ xiǎng chī shénme, wǒmen dōu kěyǐ zuò.
Whatever you want to eat, we can make it.
你什么时候来都行,每个人的名字都在名单上。
nǐ shénme shíhou lái dōu xíng, měi ge rén de míngzi dōu zài míngdān shàng.
You can come whenever you like; everyone’s name is on the list.
任何人都能报名,各种水平的学生都欢迎。
rènhé rén dōu néng bàomíng, gèzhǒng shuǐpíng de xuésheng dōu huānyíng.
Anyone can sign up; students of every level are welcome.
Hint · 힌트
The first 谁/什么/什么时候 is the open choice; 都 makes the statement cover every possible answer. In the last example, 任何 already means “any,” so 都 adds an all-inclusive emphasis.
