By Now, Still, Again 已经
Your bus is late, your friend is still waiting, and the driver says it has already left the station. 已经 looks back at what has happened by now; 还 keeps a state going; 又 reports a repeat, and 再 points to the next one. Those small time words tell the listener where the story stands.
如果我知道的话，我早就已经告诉你了。
rúguǒ wǒ zhīdào dehuà， wǒ zǎojiù yǐjīng gàosù nǐ le。
Had I known about it, I would have told you.
刚刚有人给你打电话。
gānggāng yǒu rén gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà。
Somebody just called.
他忽然来了。
tā hūrán lái le。
He suddenly came.
我跟他说话的时候，他一直往旁边看。
wǒ gēn tā shuōhuà de shíhou， tā yīzhí wǎng pángbiān kàn。
When I was talking with him, he was constantly looking to his side.
