It Depends, and It’s About the Same によって・と同じくらい
Use によって違[ちが]う to say that something varies depending on the person, place, or other factor. と同[おな]じくらい compares the degree of an action or quality: “about as much as” or “to the same extent as.”
The time needed varies from person to person.
Hint · 힌트
Here によって names the factor that changes the result. It often appears in practical explanations: 会社によって違う, “it differs by company”; 季節によって変わる, “it changes with the season.” によって also marks means or an agent in other sentences, so use context to tell the jobs apart.
I eat about as much as my older sister.
This town is about as convenient as Tokyo.
Hint · 힌트
と同じくらい works with verbs and adjectives. For a broad estimate, くらい leaves room for a small difference; it doesn’t claim the two amounts are mathematically identical.
